Laptop maker Acer accuses Apple of starting ‘patent war’

Manufacturers of Android devices continue to unite against, with Acer joining the fray Apple as the company’s claims of patent infringement continue to threaten HTC.

Acer’s chairman, JT Wang, said his company is ready to face any patent infringement challenges associated with adopting Android, according to a report Friday from DigiTimes. He also accused Apple of being an instigator with its legal action against HTC.

“As Apple’s patent lawsuits against HTC have created concerns among market watchers, and have even strongly impacted HTC’s stock price, Wang pointed out that the player, which started the patent war, wants either money or market influence and should consider any related losses as costs of doing business,” the report said.

The comments are not the first time Wang has disparaged Apple. Last fall, he predicted that the iPad’s share of the tablet market would plunge to less than a third because of the “closed platform” of Apple’s iOS.

Acer has been a fervent defender of Android on tablets, as Wang said he believes Google’s mobile platform “simply needs a little more time before it turns strong.”

Acer’s chief executive resigned from the company in April as the company looks to reorganize in an effort to take on Apple’s market-leading iPad. At the time, it was said that the impact from successful Apple products was a “key reason” for the departure of Gianfranco Lanci.

The release of the iPad in 2010 had a major impact on the netbook market, of which Acer was king. Thanks in part to the iPad, Acer has seen its sales plummet drastically.

In the latest quarterly PC sales figures, Gartner found that Acer’s shipments dropped more than 22 percent in the U.S. from 2010. Things weren’t much better worldwide, where Acer’s estimated sales also dropped more than 20 percent year over year.

Gartner’s preliminary Worldwide PC market share estimates for the second quarter of 2011.

The collapse of the netbook market has led Acer to embrace Android on a series of tablet-style devices the company hopes will take on the iPad. Acer has also adopted Google’s other operating system, Chrome, to build low-cost Chromebooks built for the Web-centric platform.

Acer’s alignment with Google and Android makes it one of a number of manufacturers with a close eye on Apple’s patent infringement suit against HTC. Earlier this month, a judge at the ITC gave an initial ruling that HTC has violated two patents owned by Apple.

Apple’s initial legal victory has led some onlookers to suggest that other Android device makers could also be in trouble based on their use of Google’s platform. It’s also been suggested that Apple could collect a lucrative royalty rate from Android device makers, similar to the $5-per-unit fee Microsoft allegedly collects from HTC. Read More

How the financial crisis has hit the construction industry

Author: jade

With Today’s financial crisis and Super-tax hitting employers hard, it is near impossible to find a well-paid job around that matches your qualifications if any.

Thousands of teenagers have left school and now face the huge challenge of finding work in the tough jobs market. Christopher Weir knows how hard it can be.

However with a bit of grit and determination and sending out more than100 CVs to potential employers he managed to land a job.

“This time last year I had no idea where I was heading or what to do and was desperately trying not to lose heart,” says Christopher. “It was tough but eventually, in September, I got the prefect training job for me.

Christopher, of Sandhurst, Berks, had taken his exams, left school and got his CV perfected. He fancied an apprenticeship as an electrician and sent out more than 100 CVs and letters.

“I trawled through Yellow Pages getting addresses, asked local companies if they were recruiting and scoured the internet for jobs. It was hard to keep positive when less than half bothered to even acknowledge me, let alone get me in for an interview.”

“A friend of my mum’s said they would hand a copy on to someone they knew and suddenly I was called by Persimmon Homes to go in for an interview.”

By then Christopher knew he had 10 GCSEs, ranging from an A* to Cs which meant he could have easily landed himself a college course, however employers did not take advantage of this fact.

Out of all those letters sent out to both huge brand names and local businesses, Christopher managed to get just two interviews.

”I went in to meet them making sure I’d done all my research and was looking really smart. It wasn’t an electrician’s apprenticeship but their own First Trainee Scheme.”

Christopher was delighted when they offered him a job at their Camberley offices in the technical department. “I went for a taster day and knew instantly that it was the right thing for me to be doing. I found all the back-up work that goes into the construction business really interesting,” says Christopher.

“I spend one day a week at college in Reading, where I am now half way through my Construction in the Built Environment course. At school I sometimes couldn’t be bothered but this is so much more interesting. The things I’m learning are directly relevant to what I’m doing at work so it all makes sense.”

“The work is fantastic. I have learnt so much from looking at potential sites to develop, to planning applications, design and build specification and, in particular, working with architects and landscape designers.”

However it is not just school leavers who find it hard landing themselves a job in the construction industry. Employers are certainly tightening their belts when it comes to the pure amount of workers, meaning redundancies are being issued to even the long term workers.

Not only that but employers are now being strict with skills and qualifications new workers bring to the construction site. 10 Years ago you merely needed a good back ground in the industry, whereas these days all that experience generally tends to be backed up with qualifications.

However it is not all doom and gloom, as a new BTEC Construction course has been set up, aimed at the workers already in the construction industry who are looking to improve on their skills, or simply seeking advice about contractual disputes.

Hopefully the future will be more prosperous than today’s financial crisis.

Become A Part Of The Community By Volunteering

Author: Kristi Hennessey

Volunteering is a great way to network with your fellow community. Helping the people around you can offer the benefits of building networks throughout your communal groups. You become a part of a bigger group as you get involved in assisting people that need help by meeting new people and sharing your gifts with those around you.

The needs of your community can vary from homeless shelters to religious group efforts. Check with local volunteer networks to see if there is a group near you that you can assist. You want to find something that is near you and readily available to make it easy for you to help. If it is hard for you to volunteer, it is likely you won’t follow through. Helping others is going to take time out of your day, so you will need to organize your calendar accordingly. Remember that volunteer work should not only benefit the community, but also benefit you. Try not to do something you dislike or if you feel that it will inconvenience you. If you’re discontent with the situation, your help may not always have a positive effect on the group. Finding something you like to do will help you find a niche.

Employees in transition find this an easy way to become a part of the community

There are many positive ways that will help you enjoy aiding your fellow community. Perhaps your specific skill set can be of service to a particular group. Writing, artistic talents that are special to you can be useful to groups that may need talent to spread the word about their group’s efforts. Even mechanical and industrial skills can benefit your community through repair services that you can offer. If you are trying to decide how you can help, look at what you have to offer your community. Be a part of something greater, and make some new friends too.

Perhaps your community shares similar interests with you. Finding something that you enjoy and feel driven to do often does not feel like work at all. You want to help and you enjoy what you’re doing, making your help an enjoyable experience. This can be a great way to do something you like. Helping an animal shelter or perhaps the local educational system gets you involved in the community and your passion about what you’re doing will strengthen the bond that can develop. Try doing something you like to do, and volunteer work won’t feel like it is taking time away from your schedule; instead it will seem more like a hobby. Both you and the community benefit from this situation, you enjoy it and they get the help they need.

Consider the benefits of helping your community. You meet new people and this can be very good for someone new to the neighborhood. Networking with people can open new doors through groups and fellow members while you get to know them. Perhaps someone you meet through your volunteer work can help you in return. Remember, when you give to the community, it gives back.

Go As A Volunteer To Thailand To Really Enjoy Your Vacation

Author: James Yardy

There is a noble way to enjoy your vacation in Thailand and you will surely prefer over the normal way of a tourist where you just go to the same places where everyone has gone before you. There can be only limited fun in the latter trip. But the repetitive nature of a guided tour takes away the charm that you would otherwise get in a trip that is totally unplanned, a trip that you can plan each day in an area of your choice. When you take up one of the volunteer jobs in Thailand you can enjoy this new kind of vacation.

In this vacation you can be a teacher teaching small children English. You can be a great architect helping with the construction of a building for destitute children or an animal scientist, a veterinary doctor helping endangered wildlife, a doctor caring for the sick and the orphaned or a sociologist assisting in different tasks to help communities such as a vegetable garden or a fish farm.

The best part is that for this kind of volunteer work no formal education is necessary. You need not be a formal teacher or an architect or a sociologist, doctor or a veterinary surgeon. You just have to be a good human being, a person who would like to do socially useful work for the right kind of causes.

This kind of volunteer travel will take you to excitingly different places such as Maehongson and Surin, Phuket and Rayong depending on the kind of work that you opt for. While you are immersed in such work you would be involved for only four days in the week. You can thereafter enjoy your extended weekend any way that you like. The entire vacation ceases to be a boring and tedious affair. You will enjoy the time as well spent with the poor villagers and while sharing their problems with them you would be richly rewarded in terms of mental satisfaction. You will make friends and will get to see the true Thailand, a Thailand that a normal tourist does not get to see.

Get Creative with Your Cookie Dough Fundraising Ideas

Author: Desiree Bryant

Having a fundraiser that is unique, creative and different from other fundraisers becomes more and more difficult each year.  But, it’s also difficult to switch things up, when people start to expect and look forward to certain fundraisers.

A fun and easy fundraising idea is a cookie dough fundraiser.  Each year people look forward to purchasing cookies that they can’t always find in the supermarket, such as Girl Scout cookies.  But what about people who love to bake but don’t always have time to.  They look forward to cookie dough fundraisers.  A great way to promote your cookie dough fundraiser is to have a bake sale, where people can taste the cookie dough that they want to purchase and they can purchase the cookie dough.

These kinds of fundraisers are great because you can actually utilize multiple fundraisers at one time.  You can find a cookie dough fundraiser company that also has other baked goods as well.  Being creative with your fundraising ideas and using multiple fundraisers is the best way to make sure you are as profitable as possible with your fundraisers.

Another fun fundraising idea for your cookie dough fundraiser is to have fortune cookies.  In the cookie, you have your piece of paper (or fortune) and on one side it tells you a fun fact about the various cookie dough’s you have available, such as ‘The U.S. has a National Cookie Cutter Historical Museum located within the Joplin Museum Complex in Joplin, Missouri’  ‘The official state cookie of both Massachusetts and Pennsylvania is the chocolate chip cookie’ ‘Mrs. Wakefield sold her chocolate chip cookie recipe to Nestle, who began manufacturing chocolate chips in 1939.’ And then on the other side it actually tells you the type of cookie that you should purchase, i.e. chocolate chip cookie or sugar cookie, etc.  The fortune cookies can be purchased by students to give as gifts, or by parents to serve for fun at a dinner party.  Either way, having fortune cookies tell you what type of cookie dough to purchase is just fun, creative and very unique.

If you’re really into fun historical facts, you can actually set up a fundraiser where people can come and have an old time tea-time afternoon.  With cookies (again baked from the cookie dough available) and other desserts, making sure everyone dresses up to make it even more fun.  Your fundraisers don’t always have to be specific to what you are trying to sell, but they can actually be an accessory to a bigger, more inviting fundraiser.  Coming up with ways to make cookie dough fundraisers different from others can be difficult, but being creative about a fundraising event can be simpler.  Just make sure to have your cookie dough available for purchase at your event or catalogs available.  Or just make sure people can utilize online ordering, so when they get home and find themselves craving a snicker doodle from the tea party they just attended, they can actually order it when they get home and know that it’s going to be that same snicker doodle they are craving and not some stale store-bought snicker doodle.

Renovation Property Portugal

Author: Michael Mason

Renovation property in Portugal is high in demand and there are several factors which back this sentiment. Renovation properties in Portugal are pretty cheap and moreover, the properties are also best in terms of quality. Let us analyze the reasons why renovation property in Portugal has become demanding.

Renovation property in Portugal is Economical – Since you will be having a renovated property, the price of such property will automatically be reduced. You don’t need to go for the renovation procedures, which are often quite expensive and eat away your money. Therefore, for all good reasons, the renovation property is affordable and it is easy to procure.

Appropriate Investment Property –There are several reasons why people in Portugal are moving on to investment property, and one of them is that it offers huge scope for investment. You can buy a renovated property for a low price and after a stay for say around 2-3 years and sell it off at higher prices. This will be a complete bargain for the property investor.

High Commercial Value – Renovation property in Portugal has high commercial value and for which reason there is an increasing demand of such types of properties in Portugal. Further, since most of the renovation properties are situated in well inhabited and high value areas, individual buyers find the property to have rich commercial scale value.

A memorial appreciation for dispenser j.l kamara

Author: Kortor Kamara

As the Kamara family gathers in Riverside, California on Saturday, July 23rd 2011, in celebration of the life and legacy of our dear departed daddy, uncle and friend Mr. James Lahai Kamara (JL), who departed this earth 24 years ago in 1987; we wish to highlight some of the attributes that made this son of Pujehun district such a wonderful man.

24 years ago since you departed, the loss remains ever so deep and strong, Daddy!

Born in Potoru, Barrie Chiefdom in the Pujehun district, to Maada Harouna Kamara and Madam Fodie Watta Koroma, Papa J.L Kamara attended the Holy Family Primary School in Pujehun attaining standard six and then proceeding to the Catholic Training College in Bo, where upon completion he was employed as a teacher up till 1943.

In 1943 he enlisted in the West African Frontier Force and was part of the 81st West African Division of the 14th Army, comprising of soldiers from Gold Coast, Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Gambia that saw admirable action against the Japanese in Burma during the Second World War.

At war’s end in 1945, Papa J.L returned to Freetown and under the tutelage of Dr. Milton Margai, Sierra Leone’s first protectorate physician, he was encouraged to enter the colonial medical services and trained as a nurse. He subsequently pursued further training as a pharmacist, druggist, and dispenser and practiced medicine throughout Sierra Leone. His long illustrious career in the Ministry of Health, where he retired as a Deputy Chief Pharmacist/Dispenser, culminated in postings from Freetown, Kabala, Makeni, Magburuka, Kenema, Bo, Pujehun, Port Loko, Zimmi and Kono where he opened his private pharmacy and health care center at retirement.

His commitment to improving our nation’s healthcare in the post independence years remains unchallenged as evidenced by the many thousands of lives saved, touched, healed and counseled in all regions of Sierra Leone.  Many more in small villages and towns were touched by his medical expertise, dedication and generosity.

His overarching attribute was his dedication and commitment to education, which motivated him to have all his children go through university and professional training.  At a time when paying tuition for a student at Fourah Bay College was exclusively the purview of government, absent which many talented students were unable to fulfill their dream of higher education, Papa JL paid tuition and board for some of his children when government was no longer able to afford scholarships.

When we remember your sacrifices and personal deprivations for family, your untimely loss still remains a source of grave sorry to all your children and extended family.

We shall forever remain grateful for the love, nurturing and education you provided, for as you always reminded us, “education is what I am leaving for you guys and not property, for being the key to success, your individual educational pursuits is what I believe in and will support with my last cent”.

From Children:  Professor Lawrence Kamara, Bartholomew ( M.B), Kortor (USA), Maada, Eddie, Mustapha (USA), Mary Rose (USA), Josephine (Nigeria), Sheku (Belgium), Fodie, Fodie (USA), and Lamina Kamara (USA).

Widows: Mrs. Fatmata Kamara and Mrs. Mamie Kamara (USA).
